Mission
Definition:
The mission describes the organisation’s primary and overarching reason for existence.
Purpose:
The purpose of the mission statement is to keep the focus of the organisation, and is also used to rank and prioritise initiatives.
Working Drafts:
- To win people for Christ and to nurture them to spiritual maturity
- To lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by creating environments where participants are encouraged and equipped to pursue: 1) Intimacy with God2) Community with insiders3) Influence with outsides
- Growing Christians to change their community and impact the world by helping them to live lives worthy of their calling
- To win friends, family, employees, employers, colleagues, seekers, and people in need for Christ, and to nurture them to spiritual maturity
Final
The PLOT Thickens:
To lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. To nurture and equip them to pursue:
- Intimacy with God
(Everything that they do and become must flow from an intimate relationship with God) - Influence in the community
(We want people to be outward focussed and to impact their family, friends and colleagues as well as people less fortunate than themselves) - Their divine purpose
(We want people to understand that God has a unique calling for their lives and encourage them to find it and follow it whether it is ministry inside our outside of our church)
Notes:
If this is our mission, then every ministry should ensure that whatever is event, program or activity is held, or whatever teaching is given, does it directly enforce or diliver on the mission.

The PLOT
To win people for Christ and to nurture them to spiritual maturity
This was taken from the 2006 communication meeting as is probably the closet thing that BBC currently has to a mission statement

I'm not sure where Foucs area's fit but here are the BBC Focus areas for 2006 as a reference:
Prayer - Institute a culture of prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit
Going Out - social responsibility and missions
Bringing In - evangelism to our local community
Teaching - God's Word as it applies to my life Today
Spiritual Growth - for individuals and the church body

Add comments on the following:
1) Win people - which people and how?
2) Spiritual Maturity - what does this look like to you?
3) Test the mission by what each different role player will think e.g. outsiders, members, Ministry leaders, Elders and Deacons.

Mission:
Here is a go at the Long Mission Statement
1) Basic doctrine is taught in a powerful and culturally relevant way for each generation and people group. ("But only enough to launch into space")
2) Programs, services and events provide practical ways (for believers ) on how to take the next steps of obedience.
3) Each believer is aligned to the direction of the church and serving in a ministry for which they are spiritually gifted and passionate about
4) Believers will develop deep authentic relationships that encourage them in their faith, and assist them in reaching the lost.
5) Each believer is actively involved in reaching un-churched people (friends, family, employees, employers, colleagues, seekers, and people in need), in partnership with BBC
6) BBC is declaring the love and character of God to the community (and the rest of the world) in selected compassion ministries aimed at meeting the tangible needs of the poor.

Hi Rog
I'm not convinced about the wording but I think you long Mission statement covers all of the bases nicely. I really like the focus of helping Christians to grow to the point where they can "blast off into space".
It is interesting that "The PLOT" doesn't mention anything about compassion ministries as you call them which is something that is absolutley integral to BBC today.

Three key elements:
Discipleship, Evangelism, Missions
Focus on taking people to water with bread crumbs

The PLOT Thickens
To win people for Christ and to nurture and equip them to pursue:
1) Intimacy with God
2) Christlikeness
3) Their calling - Spiritual Gifts Ministry, Evanglism, Missions

My attempt at an expanded Mission that explains things as I see them. The wording still needs some work.

Mission:
Here's a variation on BBC's current mission that I got from Ruth: "Through word and deed to reach people for Christ and to disciple them to spiritual maturity so that they in turn can reach and disciple others"
